New Perspectives on Gwen John: A Forum

Join Amgueddfa Cymru for our symposium on the life and work of Gwen John alongside our landmark retrospective Strange Beauties.

This series of talks and discussions will present new insights into the artist’s powerful and idiosyncratic artistic vision, all taking place in the museum’s historic Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre.

Throughout the day, we will focus on Amgueddfa Cymru’s extraordinary collection of drawings, sketchbooks and paintings that were left in the artist’s Paris studio after her death. This collection encourages new ways of seeing and understanding one of Wales’s most important and internationally recognised artists.

The event will feature talks by Amgueddfa Cymru staff including Lucy Wood, Senior Curator of Art & curator of Gwen John: Strange Beauties; Fiona McLees, Senior Paper Conservator; Rachel Beard, Senior Paintings Conservator; and Helena Anderson, Bristol University & Amgueddfa Cymru PhD researcher.
