Everyman Theatre: Antigone
Sophocles’ play, although over 2000 years old, still has relevance today as witnessed by the many adaptations over the centuries by many famous writers.
This production, featuring an all female cast and using a contemporary version of the text by a female writer, Marianne McDonald, focuses on the themes of the conflict between the individual versus the state and the role of women in a matriarchy rather than a patriarchy.
The contemporary staging, using the cast as an ensemble, will integrate the principal characters with the chorus, with a set/costume design incorporating a ‘peace camp’ styling.
