Stepping into The Ivy Cardiff for the launch of their Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale menu feels like entering a different era — one where elegance is effortless and every detail is curated with care. The interior alone deserves its own paragraph: a bold blend of maximalism and refinement, where art deco meets botanical whimsy. It’s no surprise the space has earned its reputation — this is a restaurant that knows how to make an entrance.

The fixed menu pays tribute to classic English dining, reimagined with The Ivy’s signature polish. I began with the Severn & Wye Valley Smoked Salmon, a dish that offered simple elegance and clean flavour, though I found myself wishing I’d opted for something more adventurous. The 21 Day Aged Sirloin Steak, however, was a standout. Served with chips and a rich red wine sauce, it was generously portioned and beautifully cooked, with a presentation that let the quality speak for itself.

Dessert was the true highlight: the Orchard Apple Tart arrived with a delicate flambé and a balance of sweetness that felt perfectly judged. It was the kind of dish that rounds off a meal with quiet triumph — refined, comforting, and visually striking.

Despite being a fixed menu, the selection was impressively varied. From hearty meat dishes to lighter vegetarian options, each course offered enough choice to suit different tastes without compromising on theme. It’s a thoughtful curation that avoids the usual rigidity of set menus, and encourages diners to explore.

The Ivy’s cocktail menu is equally expansive, with a mix of classics and bespoke creations that reflect the restaurant’s flair for indulgence. I tried the Spiced Pumpkin Espresso Martini, a seasonal twist that leaned into sweetness without overwhelming. And the West End Hold Up, which struck a perfect balance of bitterness and depth. Both were excellent, but they’re just a glimpse into a drinks list that includes everything from vintage wines to playful aperitifs.

Service throughout the evening was impeccable, with staff striking that rare balance between professionalism and warmth. Special mention must go to Beth, the restaurant manager, whose attentiveness and charm elevated the experience from excellent to exceptional.

Whether you’re a Downton devotee or simply in search of a refined evening out, The Ivy’s latest offering is well worth a visit. It’s a menu that honours tradition while embracing modern flair, all within a setting that’s every bit as memorable as the meal.
