I was happy to be invited to come along to the Wales Millennium Centre to review the latest production, The Last Laugh, where we saw a reimagining of three iconic comedians sharing a dressing room before a big show. Sharing jokes and stories, teasing and bantering, and revealing parts of themselves that perhaps even their fans might not have known.

When you step into that auditorium, you expect to laugh (which you will!), but what was surprising was the heartrending emotion that this play brings to its audience. The ebb and flow of quick-witted comedy and the subtle weaving of a darker truth behind the lives of these infamous comedians created a rhythm that was both entertaining and deeply moving.

Bob Golding as Eric Morecambe, Damian Williams as Tommy Cooper, and Simon Cartwright as Bob Monkhouse were a wonder. Their unbelievable portrayal of these three famous comedians was incredible. It was as though their namesakes had come back to the stage once again. Each actor captured not only the voice and mannerisms of their character, but the emotional weight behind the public persona. There were moments of pure hilarity, followed by quiet reflections that lingered long after the curtain call.

The writing was sharp and affectionate, filled with classic one-liners and backstage anecdotes that had the audience roaring. But it was the quieter moments—the pauses, the glances, the confessions—that gave the show its depth. It’s a rare thing to see comedy used so effectively to explore vulnerability.

This show brought a true sense of nostalgia to the audience. You could feel the warmth in the room as people recognised familiar jokes, remembered old routines, and connected with the humanity behind the humour.

Your heart will warm as you laugh along. The Last Laugh is more than a tribute—it’s a celebration of legacy, laughter, and the lives behind the laughter. A must-see for anyone who’s ever chuckled at a punchline and wondered what came after.

The Last Laugh will be at the Wales Millennium Centre until the 16th August, so get your tickets now!
