Kate Williams is a Penarth-based portrait photographer. In November, she will open a photographic exhibition at Penarth Pier Pavilion, where she will display photos capturing the real emotions of life. We spent a little time with Kate to learn more about her love for photography and her desire to capture precious moments in time.

What got you into photography?

During my graphics degree in 1999, I exclusively combined both graphics and photography. Over the years and still working as a graphic designer, the photography side seemed to take a hold, and I started experimenting with emotions through the lens. In this, I mean allowing the photograph to tell the story- a story that is subjective. No words needed. I found a passion and excitement towards portrait photography.

What’s your advice for someone looking to get into this industry?

Stay true to your heart and what works for you. There are plenty of people out there who are itching to say you have done it wrong- again that is subjective. Believe in your own ability to make decisions within your own photography. Finally, experiment, experiment, experiment! Some of my best works have been mistakes! keep totally focused on your surroundings. I would liken it to a keen third eye! When shooting, I am so focused that I don’t even hear people around me.

What is your favourite aspect of your job?

Knowing when I captured a true moment in time! I love being absorbed into the camera’s lens. It is like a whole new world that I am experiencing for the first time. It is electric and fills my soul!

What are your career goals for 2023?

I would like to grow my company. Not enough people are aware of the beauty in non-staged photography. It is really where you capture the most authentic photographs. I use my camera and my ability to see a good photograph. Everything is free and hand held, no lighting or tripods. It is a brave decision and I have to work very hard for the shot that I am looking for, but I am also being true to my ethos of moments in time.

Are there any challenges you face in your industry?

Not really. I would style myself as art as apposed to taking photos. The IPhone has become a brilliant way to capture selfies and life shots. I indeed often use mine for memory savers. The difference is, you can’t create depth within a photo that a camera and lens does- it sits on the surface. Photography comes into its own when you are wanting a message to be read from the imagery itself; that takes multiple layers to achieve that.

What are your favourite projects for next year?

Gosh, that’s a big question. I have all sorts of projects coming up next year. The main one would be photographing schools in and around Cardiff; these are all simple moments in time. I am fully DBS checked, so am able to spend a day capturing school life. This includes sports day, end of year, graduation and school events.

What is your personal and professional ethos?

Personally, I respect each and everyone’s personal autonomy. I never reach past anyone’s personal space. Professionally, I keep to all guidelines, I am insured, hold a current DBS, which is regularly checked.

Tell us more about your exciting upcoming exhibition.

Well, I feel very lucky to have been accepted for this exhibition. The team from Penarth Pier Pavilion- notably Karen- has been really supportive and kind in making things so easy. I am really quite excited for the public to experience my work, and of course hope it is received well. I believe this exhibition is a new way for folk to view photography.
