The Summer of Sharing campaign aims to make it easier, cheaper, and more sustainable for households to get the household items they need.
Benthyg Penarth has launched its Summer of Sharing campaign, encouraging local people to borrow useful household, garden and party equipment instead of buying items they may only use once or twice.
As Wales continues its journey towards becoming a zero-waste nation, Benthyg Penarth is helping people make small, practical changes that have a big collective impact. By borrowing instead of buying rarely used items, households can cut down on waste, save money and reduce unnecessary consumption – all while getting access to quality equipment when they need it.

“We want people to see that sustainable living doesn’t have to be complicated,” said Dan Brown, project officer. “Borrowing instead of buying is a simple way to save money, free up space at home and reduce waste at the same time. Whether you’re sorting the garden, planning a family BBQ or tackling DIY jobs over the summer, Benthyg Penarth makes it easy to get what you need without the cost and environmental impact of buying new.”
The campaign also encourages a return to practical community sharing – borrowing useful items when needed rather than everyone purchasing and storing their own. By choosing to borrow locally, borrowers are not just saving money, they are also contributing to a reduction in waste and consumption, making a collective impact on the environment.
“With Welsh recycling rates now at an impressive 68.4%, our Summer of Sharing campaign moves the focus from ‘recycling after use’ to ‘sharing before we buy’, helping to prevent waste at the source,” Dan continued, “It’s also a great way for neighbours to support one another and make better use of things already available in the community.”
The library is open for anyone to browse, book, and borrow online, with the local team on hand to support those who may be new to the process or unsure how to use specific equipment.
