Review: Blood Brothers at Wales Millennium Centre

The 2024 tour production of Blood Brothers at the Wales Millennium Centre is a powerful rendition of Willy Russell’s iconic musical. Directed by Bob Thomson and Bill Kenwright, this production lives up to its legacy, bringing both energy and deep emotion to the tale of twin brothers separated at birth, who grow up in starkly different worlds.

Vivienne Carlyle‘s portrayal of Mrs. Johnstone captures the character’s warmth, resilience, and the heartbreaking consequences of the choices she is forced to make. Carlyle’s performance of “Tell Me It’s Not True” is particularly memorable, leaving the audience visibly moved, some in tears, myself included. Her story is the tragedy of a mother torn between love and circumstance, making Mrs. Johnstone a sympathetic and profoundly human character.

Sean Jones, as Mickey, and Joe Sleight, as Eddie, are fabulous in their roles as the twin brothers. Jones’ depiction of Mickey’s descent from a carefree boy to a troubled man struggling with the weight of his reality is gripping. His performance captures the despair and frustration of a life shaped by poverty and missed opportunities. Sleight provides a strong contrast as Eddie, who embodies the privileges and naivety of an affluent upbringing. The chemistry between the two actors makes their characters’ inevitable, tragic bringing together again all the more poignant.

Sarah Jane Buckley’s portrayal of Mrs. Lyons is also noteworthy, bringing out the character’s internal conflict and eventual descent into paranoia with a balance of vulnerability and intensity. Her dynamic with Carlyle’s Mrs. Johnstone adds to the emotional consequences of their fateful agreement.

Scott Anson as the Narrator provides an useful presence throughout the show, guiding the audience through the story with a dark tone that enhances the tension, and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

The production is visually and musically stunning, with memorable performances of songs like “Bright New Day” and “Marilyn Monroe”. The set design and lighting effectively evoke the contrasting worlds of the two brothers, contributing to the storytelling.

Overall, Blood Brothers at the Wales Millennium Centre is a must-see production that masterfully balances emotional intensity with superb performances, staying true to the spirit of Willy Russell’s timeless classic.
