Welsh screen icon Dame Siân Phillips is showing her support for the Age Cymru This is Older campaign, celebrating the vibrancy, diversity, and individuality of older people.
To mark the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons on 1 October, acclaimed photographer Jon Pountney captured Phillips in striking portraits that highlight individuality, personality, and the spirit of older people.
These images form part of the effort to challenge stereotypes and promote a more inclusive view of ageing.
Dame Siân Phillips is a true Welsh treasure, with a dazzling career spanning stage, screen, and television for over six decades. Born in Carmarthenshire, she trained at RADA and quickly became known for her powerful presence and versatility, from Shakespeare classics to West End hits and iconic TV roles like I, Claudius. Beyond her award-winning performances, Phillips has been a passionate advocate for the arts in Wales, inspiring generations with her creativity, energy, and unmistakable charm.
The campaign also features a moving video, See me, value older age, funded by the Welsh Government, where older people across Wales share their experiences of ageism in their own words.
Kelly Barr, Arts and Creativity Manager at Age Cymru, says: “Dame Siân’s support sends a strong message about the importance of visibility and representation. We hope this campaign sparks a national conversation about ageism and inspires action to create a society where older people are seen, heard, and valued.”
Ageing affects us all, so it’s time to rethink how older people are portrayed. The campaign offers a free image library showing older people as whole individuals, celebrating diversity in lifestyles, backgrounds, and identities.
