A48 Theatre Company: The Bet
‘The Bet’ is a new play by Owen Thomas, author of ‘Grav’ and ‘Carwyn’. In which comic dialogue is used to tell how a decision made by one man has wide-ranging consequences for both himself and everyone around him.
The conscience of ‘The Man’ is intriguingly revealed by well-renowned actor, Dion Davies, prompted by the poignant and hilarious comments of The Chorus- played by members of A48 Theatre Company. Owen himself describes the play as “a Greek tragedy- of sorts!”
Director of ‘The Bet’, Ray Thomas, welcomes the foray into the realms of comedy and poetry after A48’s recent run of serious and intense productions including ‘When the Rain Stops Falling’ in 2021. But, though based on an original idea by Dion Davies, an associate actor at the Torch Theatre, this story too, like ‘Grav’ and ‘Carwyn’, has its origin in real events and a sporting background.
In 2022 Owen was nominated as Best Writer at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his screenplay of ‘Grav’ which won the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Film. Owen’s play, ‘Carwyn’, about the life of Carwyn James, met with equal appreciation from its audience. Owen has recently been named the inaugural English language Writer in Residence for the Brecon Beacons National Park. A play which he was written in response to this appointment will premiere at the Hay Festival in 2023.
