Lecture: The Barry Railway

The Rise of Barry Railway and it’s impact on South Wales.

Join us on 22nd October at 6:30pm for a captivating evening with Peter, as he delves into the fascinating history of the Barry Railway- a pivotal project that transformed the landscape of South Wales in the late 19th century.

In the 1870s, cold traffic from the Rhondda Valley faced increasing congestion due to the trustees of Cardiff Docks’ refusal to expand. This led Walter Insole, David Davies, and other visionary mine owners to undertake a bold venture: constructing a new railway from Trehafod near Porth to the newly established docks at Barry, then a quiet farming community.

Peter will take us through the intricate background of this ambitious project and explore how the railway expanded, crossing the iconic Walnut Tree Viaduct and reaching into the Rhymney Valley and along the Vale of Glamorgan to Bridgend. He’ll also shed light on the railway’s crucial role in the development of Barry Island, a beloved destination for generations.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the railway that played a significant role in shaping the region’s industrial and social landscape. Mark your calendar for an evening of history and insight!
