Explore the Kingdom of the High Brown Fritillary Butterfly. While the butterfly won’t be flying at this time of year, the walk will be an opportunity to explore Old Castle Down SSSI and the important mixture of flora that is essential to the success of the butterfly in this area. The High Brown Fritillary has declined 96% in its distribution and in Wales only a single colony remains. The species is now restricted to the Old Castle Down and Cwm Alun area in the Vale of Glamorgan, leaving it highly vulnerable to extinction. The butterfly won’t be visible at the time of the walk but you will learn lots about the species and the habitat management including the importance of conservation grazing.
