What an incredible achievement for our favourite local bookshop, Griffin Books, who have won UK Independent Bookshop of the Year. Owner Mel Griffin and her devoted team were nominated for the British Book Awards earlier this year before bringing home the crown.

These awards are a celebration of books in all its forms. It affirms, connects and energises the world of reading by showcasing the authors and illustrators who have stirred our hearts and imaginations, and the industry behind the scenes who have brought them to readers. Above all, it celebrates the intimate connection between the books, their makers and their audience. The British Book Awards is one of the most widely respected book awards, and it’s an amazing achievement to just be nominated.

Mel and her colleague Holly attended the awards ceremony on 15 May 2023 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London. They were one of nine national and regional nominees, and, the next day, were beyond proud to announce that they had taken home the trophy for UK Independent Bookshop of the Year!

In Mel’s announcement post the next morning she said: “Last night was truly a celebration of what the book world so brilliant, from the wonderful authors and publishers to the agents, publicists, designers, and, of course, the fabulous indie bookshops across the UK who bring so much to their local communities. We want to say a HUGE thank you to our customers for your ongoing support, especially over the last few years.“

This award could not have gone to a more worthy candidate. Griffin Books is a pillar of the community and has become more than just a local bookshop. We spoke to Mel Griffin about the award win: “I’m very proud of what we have achieved as a team- it’s wonderful to have all our hard work recognised. This would not have been possible without the support of our customers and the local community. This award means a lot to us, but also says a lot about the vibrancy of independent businesses in Penarth and throughout Wales.”
