The energy of Steps has arrived on stage in the most gloriously camp way imaginable, and it’s an absolute triumph.
I was invited to watch Here & Now: The Steps Musical last night, and despite not usually being a big fan of jukebox musicals, I left the theatre completely won over. From the very first number, it was clear this show knew exactly what it was — bold, cheeky, heartfelt, and unapologetically over‑the‑top — and it leaned into that identity with total confidence.

The story centres on Caz, played by Lara Denning and her friends Vel (played by Jacqui Dubois), Neeta (played by Rosie Singha) and Robbie (played by Dean Rickards) working at Better Best Bargains supermarket, all hoping for a summer filled with romance and good vibes. But when Caz suddenly learns that the future she thought she had isn’t quite what it seemed, everything is thrown off balance. As the gang stumble through their own chaotic attempts at love, each one more disastrous than the last, they start to wonder whether fate is ever going to give them a break, or if it’s time to take control and create their own version of a happy ending.

Jukebox musicals can sometimes feel awkward, with songs squeezed in whether they fit or not, but this production avoids that entirely. The storyline is loose enough to let the music breathe, allowing each hit to slot naturally into the world of the show. And yes, it’s cheesy. But because the show embraces that wholeheartedly, it never feels forced. Instead, it becomes part of the charm.

The result is a night that is genuinely hilarious and endlessly fun. The audience was smiling, laughing, and bopping along from start to finish. With all the classic Steps hits woven throughout, it was often hard not to dance in your seat. There’s a real warmth to the whole production — the kind of feel‑good energy that lifts your mood and stays with you long after the curtain comes down.

The cast deserve huge credit for that. Every performer brought an incredible amount of energy to the stage, and a show like this absolutely depends on that commitment. They captured the spirit of Steps while still making the characters their own, and their enthusiasm was infectious. You could feel how much fun they were having, and that joy radiated through the theatre.

Fans of Steps will adore the show — there are plenty of nods to iconic moments, moves, and memories — but you don’t need to know the band’s entire discography to have a brilliant time. It’s a show that welcomes everyone in, whether you’re a lifelong fan or just someone looking for a night of pure entertainment.

Here & Now is heartwarming, hilarious, and bursting with feel‑good energy. It’s the kind of musical that leaves you walking out of the theatre in a genuinely great mood, humming the songs and wishing you could watch it all over again. A truly joyful night out.
