Honouring our heroes: Penarth Remembrance Day Parade 2023

Armistice Day holds a special place in the hearts of millions worldwide. It’s a day when nations come together to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of freedom and peace. In Penarth, a dedicated team of individuals is ensuring that the Act of Remembrance remains an integral part of the community calendar.

A tradition of remembrance

Paul Todd and Greg Olphert are members of the Penarth veterans team, a group comprising serving and veteran military personnel from all branches of His Majesty’s Armed Forces. They represent the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force.

Since 2014, they have joined forces with the town’s Royal British Legion and a committee of dedicated members from the Penarth Ex Services Club to ensure that Remembrance Sunday remains a cherished occasion. This committee consists solely of volunteers who are passionately committed to upholding the Remembrance Sunday tradition in the town.

One of the primary goals of the committee is to ensure that the Penarth Remembrance Day Parade remains a community event. It’s a festival of Remembrance that every resident can be a part of, taking pride in their shared history and heritage. Penarth, with its proud military history, has produced at least two Victoria Cross recipients, and the committee is immensely proud of its deep connections with both the military and the local community. This year, they are thrilled to continue their collaboration with three of Penarth’s schools.
