The magic of Mary Poppins has arrived at the Wales Millennium Centre, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. I was invited along to review the show, and from the very first moment it was clear this was going to be an unforgettable evening. This production perfectly captures everything we know and love about the original story, while adding its own wonderful twist. Fans of the film can revisit their love for the tale, while also experiencing something fresh and new — a balance that makes this show truly special.

The cast were outstanding across the board. Stefanie Jones was practically perfect in the title role, embodying the essence of Julie Andrews’ iconic portrayal while making the character her own. It’s a demanding part, and she carried it with grace, wit, and warmth. Jack Chambers brought charm and energy as Bert, lighting up the stage with his lively presence. Michael D. Xavier and Lucie-Mae Sumner were excellent as George and Winifred Banks, capturing both the sternness and tenderness of the household, while Rosemary Ashe as Mrs Brill and Lyn Paul as the Bird Woman added memorable touches of humour and heart. And, of course, a special standing ovation has to go to the children playing Jane and Michael Banks. Both gave truly incredible performances, it was hard to believe just how young they are by their all round talent and professionalism. Every performance contributed to a production that felt rich, layered, and full of life.

The timeless score was another highlight. Featuring the classic songs by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman — Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, and Feed the Birds — the music instantly transported audiences back to the beloved film. These were seamlessly blended with new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier Award‑winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, giving the show both nostalgia and freshness.

The technical side of the production was phenomenal. I did wonder how the whimsical, child‑like magic of Mary Poppins could be translated to the stage, but what unfolded was pure theatre magic. From flying umbrellas to enchanting set pieces, the show brought the impossible to life with seamless creativity. The musical numbers were lively and full of energy, the choreography sharp and joyful, and the costumes dazzling. Every detail worked together to create a world that felt both nostalgic and new.It didn’t take long for me to realise that this production was going to shoot straight to the top of my list of favourite shows. With its blend of beloved story, breathtaking technical achievement, and a cast that poured heart and soul into every moment, Mary Poppins at the Wales Millennium Centre is a triumph. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the film or discovering the story for the first time, this is a show that will leave you spellbound.
