Penarth goes pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness: over 40 businesses join the cause

This week, Penarth has been awash with pink as more than 40 local businesses proudly display their ‘Pink Windows’ in support of Tenovus Cancer Care’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Organised by Tenovus and spearheaded by Penarth’s mayor, Cllr Gwenda Roberts, Go Pink Week (running from 14th to 19th October) aims to raise crucial awareness about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, while encouraging fundraising efforts across the town.

For Cllr Roberts, this campaign is particularly meaningful, as Tenovus is her chosen charity for the year. “We are so grateful to all the local businesses who have gone pink this week. It is a visual reminder to our community of the importance of checking their breasts regularly and being aware of the symptoms of breast cancer,” the Mayor shared.

Supporting a Vital Cause

Breast cancer affects 56,000 people in the UK every year, equating to more than 150 diagnoses every day. Through Go Pink Week, Tenovus Cancer Care is on a mission to not only raise money for research and support services but also to increase public awareness around early detection.

Participating businesses have embraced the campaign with enthusiasm, with windows adorned in pink bunting, balloons, posters, and more. As part of the campaign, they have also received packs filled with fundraising ideas, check-your-breasts postcards, and even a fun sweepstake game to help raise donations.

Shops have been buzzing with activity as locals and visitors join in, taking the opportunity to learn more about the importance of regular breast checks and how early detection can make all the difference. For many, it’s a chance to support a cause that resonates with them.

How You Can Help

Tenovus encourages everyone to get involved in Go Pink Week, whether through visiting participating businesses, donating to fundraising efforts, or simply helping to spread the message. On Friday 18th October, the whole community is invited to wear pink to show solidarity with the thousands of people facing breast cancer.

And most importantly, take this moment to check your own breasts or remind your loved ones to do the same. Checking regularly for any changes or abnormalities is crucial for early detection, and it could save a life.

Penarth is proud to be a community that stands together in support of this vital cause, and as Go Pink Week continues, the town serves as a powerful reminder that, when it comes to fighting breast cancer, awareness and action are key.

So, as you wander through Penarth this week, be sure to stop by one of the 40 pink-themed businesses, pick up some breast check postcards, and do your part to support Tenovus Cancer Care’s incredible work. Let’s make a difference together.
