Penarth Library‘s shortlisting for Library of the Year at the British Book Awards 2026, marked a proud moment for the town, recognising how much the library gives back to its community. As one of the only three Welsh libraries to reach the final, it was celebrated for its creative programming, inclusive services, and the way it consistently encourages a love of reading across all ages.

The nomination highlighted the everyday work that makes Penarth Library such a valued local space – from staff who champion literacy and learning, to events that bring neighbours together, to the welcoming atmosphere that makes it a cultural anchor in the Vale. It was national recognition for something residents already knew: the library is one of Penarth’s most important community hubs, and its impact reaches far beyond its shelves.
