Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society have returned to the stage for panto season, and once again they’ve delivered a show brimming with energy, humour, and festive sparkle. Aladdin and His Magic Lamp is a familiar tale, but in true PODS fashion it’s been given a playful twist. Packed with witty one‑liners, slapstick routines, and a host of colourful characters who keep the story fresh and engaging.
Under the direction of Alex Wilson, the production never lost pace. From the bustling marketplace to the glittering palace, the sets were cleverly designed and full of detail, while the costumes brought vibrancy and glamour to the stage. For a local production, the polish was impressive, and it gave the whole evening a professional sheen that matched the cast’s enthusiasm.

The performances were equally strong. Andrew Carr relished his role as Abanazar, delivering villainy with a wink, while Emma Dennett’s Slave of the Ring — looking like a familiar Gavin and Stacey favourite — was a comic highlight. Together they made a sharp, quippy duo that had the audience laughing throughout. Eddy Hughes brought charm and energy to Aladdin, and Rebecca Miles showed off her vocal talents as Princess Jasmine.

Andy Bradshaw was a delight as Touc, Aladdin’s comedic sidekick, with timing that kept the laughs coming. Siân Smith’s Genie of the Lamp and Sally Mathias’ Widow Twankey added magic and mischief in equal measure, while Richard Griffiths as the Sultan and Jeremy Lewis as the Vizier rounded out the royal household with warmth and humour. Emily Glaze as Wishy Washy, Lauren Farnham as Rana, Lucy Clevett as Amira, and Brianne Williams‑Lemaire and Andrew Moreton as Tik and Tok all brought their own sparkle, ensuring every scene was packed with character and life. Along with the rest of the ensemble cast, every performer gave 110%, and that high‑energy delivery made the show a joy to watch.

With its blend of familiar story, fresh comedy, and impressive staging, Aladdin and His Magic Lamp was everything you’d want from a community panto: festive, funny, and full of heart. Once again, PODS have proven why their productions are such a highlight of the local calendar, guaranteed to leave audiences in the Christmas spirit.
The show will be at the Paget Rooms until 7th December and tickets are almost sold out so if you haven’t already, get yours now!
