PODS Presents: Steel Magnolias- A Review
PODS latest production of Steel Magnolias at the Paget Rooms is a stunning adaptation of Robert Harling’s beloved play and I was lucky enough to be invited to come and review it.
The story is set in a vibrant, ever-bustling salon in the 1980s Louisiana where we see the lives of 6 women unfold. From wedding plans to family dramas, this show perfectly encapsulates the human experience and along with the strength and power of female friendships. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and fall in love with these characters all over again.
The actors had some pretty big shoes to fill but not one of them faltered. Each giving a memorable, moving performance. Laura Day as Anelle, Amanda Matthews as Truvy, Nikki Wilson as Clairee, Chloe Welsh as Shelby and Emma Dennett as Ouiser gave us all incredible, heart-warming performances. Each capturing what makes these characters so special, while also adding their own element of depth.
But a special mention has to go to Penni Carr as M’Lynn, who’s climactic monologue left the audience stunned and teary-eyed. Her exceptional display of complex emotions was so powerful to watch, you couldn’t help but forget you weren’t watching a professional production.
I was curious to see how they would translate this story on stage, but having it solely set in Trudy’s salon really put a centre to the story and I think it worked really well. And the set was surprisingly impressive, each little detail gave further life to the story on stage.
This is everything you’d want from a show. Hilarious quips, high-energy performances and a moving story that speaks to us all. PODS has once again reclaim the meaning of ‘amateur dramatics’ and produced something truly special. It is a must watch!
Steel Magnolias will be at the Paget Rooms 12th October and tickets are selling fast, so make sure to get yours now.
