Single White Female has arrived at the Wales Millennium Centre, bringing a sharp, modern twist to the iconic 90s thriller. The story follows Allie, a recently divorced woman trying to rebuild her life with her teenage daughter, Bella. When she takes in a new roommate, Hedy, what begins as a fresh start quickly unravels into something far darker, as Hedy’s behaviour becomes increasingly obsessive and unpredictable.

I went into the show knowing very little about the original film or novel, which made the experience even more gripping. The production is intense, fast‑moving, and filled with the kind of rising tension that keeps you alert from the very first scene. It’s a real homage to the thriller genre — unsettling in all the right ways.
The staging is simple but incredibly effective. Clever lighting choices and a few well‑executed technical tricks give the show a strong visual identity without ever distracting from the story. It feels intimate, claustrophobic at times, and perfectly suited to the psychological tone.

One of the biggest surprises for me was the addition of Bella, Allie’s daughter — a character not present in the original film. Her storyline fits seamlessly into this adaptation, adding emotional weight and giving Allie another layer of conflict to navigate. It also deepens the dynamic with Hedy, whose fixation becomes even more unsettling when a teenager is involved. Rather than feeling like an add‑on, Bella’s presence strengthens the narrative and raises the stakes.

The cast deliver excellent performances across the board. Kym Marsh is captivating as Hedy, balancing charm and menace with ease. Lisa Faulkner brings warmth and vulnerability to Allie, grounding the story in something very real. Andro as Graham and Jonny McGarrity as Sam offer strong support, while Amy Snudden shines as Bella, capturing the tension and emotional complexity of a teenager caught in the middle of something she doesn’t fully understand.
This production is sharp, stylish, and thoroughly engaging — a tense psychological thriller that keeps you guessing throughout. Whether you’re familiar with the original or discovering the story for the first time, Single White Female delivers a gripping night of theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre.
