In the rush of everyday life, good posture often slips our mind. This issue, Greg Newman of Acorn Chiropractic shares some insights into how posture affects the body, the common signs of discomfort, and a few practical ways towards a healthier spine.
Posture is something most of us don’t think about until something starts to hurt. But the way we hold ourselves throughout the day has a real impact on how our muscles and joints function. When the body isn’t in good alignment, extra stress is placed on different areas of the spine and surrounding muscles.
One of the most common things I see is forward head posture. In this position, stress is added to the neck and upper back, which can lead to tension, soreness and, in some cases, headaches.
Posture can also affect how well our joints move. For example, rounded shoulders can limit the range of movement in the shoulder joints. When joints aren’t moving properly, it can gradually lead to wear and tear.
Modern lifestyles play a big role in this. Many people spend long periods sitting at desks and working on laptops. These positions weaken the muscles that normally help support good posture over time.
The symptoms people experience can vary. Neck pain is very common, along with tight shoulders and upper back discomfort. Some people also experience headaches or general stiffness.
The good news is that posture doesn’t need to be perfect all the time. Short periods in certain positions aren’t usually a problem. The key is movement – make a habit of moving regularly throughout the day. Simple exercises that strengthen the muscles around the spine and shoulders can also make a big difference.
A chiropractor can help by improving the mobility of joints that have become stiff. When joints move more freely, it allows the surrounding muscles to function better and regain strength.
At Acorn Chiropractic, we start with a thorough examination to understand exactly what’s going on. From there, we can create a treatment plan that’s tailored to each individual. Alongside chiropractic care, we also offer sports therapy and sports massage, which can be helpful for treating muscle and joint injuries.
