Wicked: A Review

The hit musical is back at the Wales Millennium Centre and we were lucky enough to be invited to come and review it. Wicked has taken the world by storm and since it first opened in 2003, millions have flooded to see it and I was so excited to see it for the first time.

This show is a modern classic, redefining the meaning of theatre magic. An exhibition of pure talent and creativity, you won’t be able to look away. The story follows the journey of how two unlikely friends who meet at university and the many decisions that led Glinda and Elphaba into becoming The Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West, giving us a whole new perspective on the Wizard of Oz. Through the strengths of friendship and the dangers of prejudice, this is a tale like no other.

Everything about this performance will blow you away. I have seen impressive productions before but this was something else. From the stunningly dynamic costumes and the impressive intricacy of the staging, you are transported to Oz.

Wicked’s score shot up to become one of my favourite theatre soundtracks. Each song is dynamic and powerful, elevated only by the unbelievable talent on that stage. The iconic duo Elphaba, portrayed by Laura Pick and Glinda portrayed by Sarah O’Connor had some pretty big shoes to fill but they did not disappoint, commanding the stage with every note and giving us an incredibly powerful and emotional performance. Laura Pick’s rendition of Defying Gravity, The Wizard and I and No Good Deed left the audience with goosebumps. And Sarah O’Connor version of Glinda was phenomenal, taking the beloved elements of the character while still making it her own.

Carl Man as Fiyero, Donna Berlin as Madame Morrible, Simeon Truby as The Wizard and Doctor Dillamond, Jed Berry as Boq and Megan Gardiner as Nessarose were all simply incredible, giving us high-energy, dazzling performances from start to finish.

And the rest of the cast, Casey Al-Shaqsy, Thomas Charles, Julie Cloke, Charlotte Coggin, Freddie Conway, Áine Curran, Jade Davies, Kamal Davis, Russel Dickson, Maddison Firth, Lydia Gerrard, James Gower-Smith, Shoko Ito, Holly Lawrence, Nick Len, Stephanie Linda, Will Lucas, Will Luckett, Ross Mbwembwe, Georgia Mcelwee, Conor O’Hara, Shereen Osman, Stuart Rouse, Christina Shand, Adam Stickler and Frazer Woolcott
