Illyria Presents: Romeo and Juliet- A Review

“Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.”

Illyria theatre company takes on one of most famous tragic love stories of all time in their recent production of Romeo and Juliet at the Kymin.

This one night in Penarth, outdoor theatre experience tells the tale of two young lovers in fair Verona who fight to be together as their rival families threaten to tear them apart. It’s a story of passion, love and loss and I was excited to be invited along to come and see it.

Romeo and Juliet has been one of my long-time favourite Shakespearean plays but unlike most, it is neither just comedy or tragedy but a careful intertwining of both, so I was interested to see how this production would capture this onstage. But it’s easy to say I was very impressed! Within the setting of the beautiful Kymin building and their use of simple, somewhat minimalist set allowed the audience to fall into the story. With high energy performances and poetic delivery, the audience fell in love with this story all over again.

This casts portrayal of these notorious characters was incredible. With a cast of only 5, each were able to encapsulate their multiple roles seamlessly (and I have to say, very impressive quick changes). Sarah Coyne as Juliet and Chris Wills as Romeo (as well as Lord Capulet), captured the audience’s hearts with their portrayal of the young lovers, with incredible onstage chemistry and a staggering emotional conclusion that tugged at the heartstrings. Lydia Waller as Nurse (as well as Tybalt and Prince Escalus) was a delightful addition to the cast, with her high energy performance and wonderful dramatic flare. And Samuel Adams as Benvolio (as well as Paris and Lord Montague) and Christopher Laishley as Mercutio (as well as Friar Lawrence and Lady Capulet), were often a hilarious duo onstage, with wonderful physical comedy and their enticing portrayal of their characters quickly deemed them an audience favourite.

If you are looking for a dose of Shakespeare under the stars, this is a must see for you! Expert or novice, this show can be enjoyed by all.
