A consideration is being made for lights and CCTV to be installed at Bute Park, in a bid to deter people from committing crimes.

After seeing crime rates soar within the past few years, the community called for action to be taken. More than 50 trees were destroyed in September at the location, with financial rewards for more information on the “extensive vandalism” and gates being locked also being considered. The potential measures will hopefully tackle the rate of arson attacks and well as crimes against women.

A report on potential safety measures was heard by Cardiff council’s cabinet on Thursday. During the meeting, cabinet member for culture and leisure Councillor Peter Bradbury said: “There’s a spotlight on this issue, particularly with Sarah Everard and Ashling Murphy, and these are massive concerns. People should feel safe in our parks, no matter what time of day or year. We’re determined to find a way forward to ensure that happens.”

There are also talks of the gates at Roath Park being locked overnight once again, after and increase of visitors to the much-loved park during the pandemic saw the gates left unlocked so visitors could enjoy the fresh air. CCTV will also be considered for the location, as well as in many parks across Cardiff.
