Life, Love and Tchaikovsky- BBC National Orchestra of Wales for the Big Screen

Life, Love and Tchaikovsky- BBC National Orchestra of Wales For The Big Screen.

Something new for us here, we’re really excited about it. Pre-recorded concert footage from the wonderful National Orchestra of Wales. Hopefully the first of many events like this.

Marta Gardolińska conducts Bacewicz Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto performed by BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Johan Dalene.

Bacewicz was a trailblazer in early 20th Century music, as a celebrated female composer who wrote this work in 1943 when her country was under Nazi occupation. The work contains a musical message of hope, with the Morse code for ‘V’ (dot dot dot dash), beaten out on the timpani during the piece- symbolising victory.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in e minor has become treasured by soloists and audiences Worldwide for its lyrical melodies, fine craftsmanship and charm. The concert ends with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4 in f minor. Emerging from a profound period of writer’s block, struggling with his sexuality and battling with a heavy bout of depression, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the music is urgent, supercharged and violent at points.

Entry is FREE of charge. There will be a voluntary retiring collection if you’d like to help with our running costs for the event.
