Ghost the Musical: A Review

“There is so much of you left behind”

One of cinema’s greatest hits has taken to the stage to sweep us up once again in Ghost The Musical. The tragically beautiful love story of Molly and her boyfriend Sam who is killed one night walking back to their apartment. As Molly drowns in her grief, Sam, with the help of a phony street psychic desperately tries to spare her the same fate.

I remember seeing this film for the first time and replaying it just to watch it again, so I was very interested to see how this iconic story would translate on screen. Easy to say I was very impressed! This show hit all those infamous moments that we know and love as well as adding its own style.

The cast had rather large shoes to fill in taking on these roles but Rebekah Lowings as Molly Jenson and Josh St. Clair as Sam Wheat did an impressive job. Their powerful chemistry on stage made those iconic moments all the more hard-hitting. And Jacqui Dubois as the legendary Oda Mae Brown was everything I’d hoped for one of my favourite characters. Jacqui gave the audience all that we loved about Oda Mae and still managed to make it her own. Utterly brilliant!

And the rest of the cast, James Mateo-Salt as Carl Brunner, Jules Brown as Willie Lopez, Garry Lee as Subway Ghost, Tim Maxwell-Clarke as Lionel Ferguson (and Hospital Ghost), Tanisha Butterfield as Clara, Keiahna Jackson-Jones as Louise, as well as Molly Cleese, Gabrielle Cummins, Olivia-Rose Deer, Wade Lewin, Jamie Pritchard, Joe Readman and Lewis Asquith

Hats off to Lighting Designer Nick Richings and Design by Mark Bailey, who created such an incredible set. Each scene had it’s own depth and life to it and despite the detailed staging and props, each transition was smooth and elegant, taking the audience seamlessly through New York. And before I saw the show, I was curious to see how they would portray the mystical elements but their simplicity in creating the illusions of Sam’s ghost was brilliantly done and kept you in the magic of the story throughout.
