We spoke with Penny Garland from French Lessons Cardiff about the benefits of learning a new language.

Tell us about your background.

I was born in Wales, but I moved to France when I was 15. I built my life there, and I lived and breathed France whilst working at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

What advice would you give those who would like to learn a new language?

Just go for it! Life is short, so don’t be afraid to do what you want. Learning a new language can expand your brain and your soul, and it can give you a more diverse outlook on life and the world around us. France understands the world differently to the UK, and it is valuable to look at current affairs through a different lens.

What is the most exciting part of your work?

French actor, Yin Bing, recently joined the Zoom group from China — they’re an A-list actor in France, so that’s pretty exciting. Another pupil, Millie Mason, has just been awarded Excellent Performance in French, after writing her own lyrics in French and is now listed on chart playlists in France. I love seeing how my students use their new skills.

What made you fall in love with Cardiff and Wales?

I moved back to Cardiff to be closer to friends and family, and I was an international PA for a little while. Eventually, I set up French Lessons Cardiff 16 years ago, and now have two people working alongside me, Marc and Benedict. We’ve cultivated a diverse group of students, and I love bringing France to Wales.

For a complete novice, what is the first step to beginning their journey?

Be committed and have the strong desire to learn and not to let go. Follow your dream and strive to follow your goal. But it won’t come over night — pupils like Millie haven’t missed one lesson. So don’t be deterred when you don’t get it straight away, and don’t let the fear factor interfere. Learning another language is truly transforming.

If you want to start your French journey, new members are welcome at our Sunday and Wednesday Zoom evenings. Trips are also available for those who want to travel and fully immerse themselves in France. Nice in the summer and Paris in the winter. We look forward to welcoming you.
