Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are radio presenters, bloggers, ambassadors for Visit Cardiff and charity patrons, who have fundraised for St Andrew’s Unity Reformed Church in Roath, for over a decade.
Wayne’s first series of events at the church — such as the infamous Roath Bake Off — was the location for this fortuitous meeting with Nathan, who was asked to come along and guest judge the Roath Bake Off in 2013. Following a string of successful Bake Offs and Roath Rocks music events, the duo established a wonderful friendship with the congregation at St Andrew’s.
Summer 2024 saw the boys take over the day to day running of the main church hall and a full renovation and restructure took place.
By rallying Roath’s local community — and Cardiff’s LGBTQ+ community — the duo have raised thousands of pounds for St Andrew’s, with one event in particular being a Roath-ian favourite: their Christmas drag show Dragged to Church.
Now, under the boys’ management, the café has a seven day a week schedule of yoga and dance classes, parent and toddler groups, theatre groups, and tabletop gaming. In addition, its Friday and Saturday events are a huge success, showcasing everything from musical theatre, children’s- and adults’-themed parties, family-friendly professional wrestling, incredible drag acts, world class tribute artists, burlesque performers, local bands, comedy, visual art and more! It has become a unique, eclectic and safe space for people to come and simply be themselves with zero judgement.
And yes — importantly — it is of course still a church! With Sunday services every week from 11am in the main building with an everyone is welcome policy.
