You know that feeling when you’re watching something live and you start to wonder if you’re actually the subject of a very elaborate social experiment? Yeah, welcome to Only Human at Wales Millennium Centre.

Derren Brown is back at Wales Millennium Centre with a brand new live show and, true to form, he’s up to his old tricks — literally. But don’t go expecting card shuffles and rabbits in hats. This is psychological illusion at its most baffling, brain-twisting and (somehow) heartwarming.

Now, we’d love to tell you exactly what happens in Only Human — but Derren would probably hypnotise us into forgetting our own names if we gave anything away. What we can say is that from the moment he steps on stage, he’s got the audience in the palm of his hand. It’s part mind-reading, part emotional rollercoaster, part “wait, did he just say what?”

Whether you’re the sceptical type who thinks, “there’s definitely a logical explanation for that,” or the sort who believes Derren may, in fact, be a wizard — there’s something here for you. Probably a moment of quiet existential crisis, followed by an audible gasp.

The staging is understated but clever, with lighting cues and sound effects perfectly timed to create just the right amount of drama. But really, it’s all about the man himself — calm, witty, and charming.

One minute you’re laughing at his dry humour, the next you’re blinking in disbelief as he reveals a prediction he made an hour ago that somehow involves someone sat in your row, or a playing card you didn’t even touch. Standard Tuesday night stuff.

And while the mind games are the main event, Only Human also sneaks in some surprisingly profound questions about choice, free will and what makes us… well, human. You’ll laugh, you’ll cheer, and, if like us, you’ll spend the car ride home trying to figure out how he did any of it!

Only Human is running at the Wales Millennium Centre until Saturday, 24 May 2025 and yes, it’s selling out fast. If you like your theatre with a side of psychic confusion and emotional whiplash, this one’s for you.
