A girl with a secret, a world stitched with riddles, and a found family that feels like home. The Alchemist’s Daughter is a heart-warming, wildly imaginative tale of magic, loyalty and becoming. Tamara Price’s debut novel is a standout addition to the young adult fantasy genre, radiating creativity and wonder from the very first page.
Set in the fictional realm of Tellus, rooted in the wild beauty of Wales, this story blends myth, adventure, and emotional depth with a cast of characters you’ll want to protect with your life. At the heart of it all Pax, a girl caught between legacy and choice, whose journey anchors the story with quiet strength. Around her gather the companion, the warrior and the witch. Each distinct, each unforgettable. Their bond feels as real and messy and loyal as any chosen family should, stitched together through trails and trust.
Price’s magic system is unlike anything I’ve read. It’s layered, lyrical and full of surprises. The quests are clever, the gods unpredictable, and the riddles keep you on your toes. But it’s the relationships that anchor the story: an unlikely group of strangers who stumble into each other’s lives and choose to stay. The diverse representation throughout is woven in with care and clarity.
Reading this book felt like stepping into a world I wish I’d had growing up. It’s funny, fierce, and full of heart. And once you’ve visited Tellus, you’ll find yourself longing to go back.
