What began as one mother’s search for connection has grown into a movement helping women across the UK discover friendship, confidence and joy through song. Singing Mamas was founded in 2010 by nurse Kate Valentine, who wanted a choir where mothers could bring their young children. More than a decade later, over 100 leaders have been trained to create welcoming singing communities that support women’s wellbeing.

There are no auditions, solos or sheet music. Instead, songs are taught by ear in a relaxed, supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to join in, regardless of experience. Babies and young children are always welcome, with tea, cake and conversation helping to create a genuine sense of community.

The benefits go far beyond music. Research has shown that group singing can reduce stress, improve mood and even support women experiencing postnatal depression. As one member, Anastasia, puts it: “Singing has become a form of therapy for me…I felt at home from the very first session.” Singing Mamas isn’t just about performing. It’s about building friendships and taking time to care for yourself in a warm, welcoming space where every woman is encouraged to simply come as she is.
